A first for elevenses… we’re offering a choice of roasts!

When a new coffee arrives at elevenses, I initially sample it using three distinctly different sample roasts, with the usual outcome of one proving to be far better than the other two. I might then tweak this roast to improve upon it further still.

West Java performed so well on two different sample roasts, I couldn’t make up my mind which to offer, so I thought "why not both?"!

All elevenses' coffees are varying degrees of medium roast but, for the sake of distinction, I’ve termed the two Java roasts, Light & Medium.

Light Roast:  flavour & aroma notes of 100% cacao chocolate, cinnamon, & dandelion milk...

with the addition of white grapefruit as the coffee cools.

Medium Roast:  flavour & aroma notes of rich milk chocolate, hazelnut, & caramel biscuit...

with the addition of red grapefruit as the coffee cools.

This West Javan coffee is a remarkable product of sustainable farming and wildlife conservation. A collaboration between local farmers and the Little Fireface Project, it supports the endangered Javan Slow Loris primate by promoting wildlife-friendly practices.

Grown under the shade of trees in home gardens across 60 hectares, near the Gunung Papandayan Protected Forest, the coffee is cultivated alongside crops like tea, chayote and cassava; preserving the delicate ecosystem and offering farmers multiple income streams.

The farmers use natural processing methods that involve drying the coffee with the fruit still on the bean, which in turn adds complexity, depth, and richness to the cup.

Not only does this coffee support local livelihoods, but it also delivers an exceptional, sustainable cup that’s ideal for all brew methods.

This coffee is brought to you by Kindred Forest, a sourcing partner focused on rainforest conservation and Indigenous collaboration. They source rare, shade-grown ingredients like coffee through a regenerative model that shares profits and supports local communities. Each product is fully traceable, grown in forest systems, and reflects a deep respect for both biodiversity and cultural heritage.

Many thanks to the coffee farmers of West Java, Kindred Forest, and Omwani for allowing me to use their excellent images
